Extended School Year

HMS’s Extended School Year (ESY) program provides education and therapy-based activities that help students maintain and enhance the level of performance they have achieved in their IEP goals. Evaluating students with severe disabilities for program eligibility is mandated as part of their educational entitlement. Students deemed eligible are funded for ESY by their sending school district.

The ESY curriculum includes special education and speech/language, physical and occupational therapies. HMS applies the same team-based approach that drives our school-year programs. ESY staff plan educational activities around fun-filled themes appropriate to summer. Students achieve their stated goals in a light-hearted environment that feels like vacation.

“The home-school communication is far superior to any that we have experienced in any other school. They push these kids, not letting them slack off and encourage them to attain their greatest potential. They care for the kids as if they were their own. I have full trust in them. They have not disappointed me in five years. I am so fortunate that my daughter is able to attend HMS.”

HMS offers a two-part ESY program. The first portion of ESY offers a residential option, begins almost immediately following the end of school and ends in mid-July. The second portion offers a day program only from mid-July through early August. Nursing services continue throughout the entire program.

The ESY program is available to students who are not enrolled at HMS for their school-year placement.
