Philadelphia, PA – June 5, 2026 – HMS School for Children with Cerebral Palsy is delighted to host its annual Prom on Friday, June 5, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This cherished tradition brings together HMS students ages 13 and older, alumni, and their families for an evening of celebration, connection, and unforgettable memories.

This year’s theme, “Secret Garden,” was selected by students, families, and staff who participated in a multi-week survey process to narrow down the theme. Earlier this year, HMS’s Prom Club members visited the Philadelphia Flower Show, where they explored breathtaking floral displays and gathered inspiration for the magical garden-themed celebration. Students then worked collaboratively with dedicated staff to bring their ideas to life, helping shape every aspect of this year’s event.

Special Education Teacher and Prom Club Advisor, Courtney Grimes, excitedly shared, “This year we will be celebrating the life and art of Isaiah Zagar with our own HMS magic garden as you enter the assembly room. We will also be joined by our furthest alumni joining us from Connecticut!”

The Secret Garden Prom will transform HMS into a whimsical oasis filled with vibrant blooms, enchanting décor, music, dancing, and opportunities for students, alumni, and families to celebrate together. The annual event is more than just about having fun; it reflects HMS’s commitment to creating meaningful social experiences that students would find in a neurotypical school environment, helping foster friendship, self-expression, confidence, and community.

“Prom is a time when we welcome back our alumni and their families to join our current students and their families for an amazing, accessible adventure,” said Teresa Giardina, Special Education and Adapted Physical Education Teacher and Prom Club Advisor. “This year, we connected our prom theme to a school-wide literacy theme around gardening, spring, and surprises. Early in our design process, our Prom Club students visited the Philadelphia Flower Show to get inspired. Then we worked together to bring those ideas to fruition. We are transforming our school into a Secret Garden and cannot wait to dance the night away!”

At HMS, opportunities like prom are an important part of the school’s holistic approach to supporting students with complex disabilities. Activities like prom, field trips, senior/graduate trips, and graduation are central opportunities for families to celebrate the milestones in each of their students’ lives.

The HMS Secret Garden Prom will take place on Friday, June 5, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and is open to HMS students ages 13 and older, alumni, and their families. The press is welcome to cover the event.
