Philadelphia, PA – HMS School for Children with Cerebral Palsy is excited to announce a brand-new mural project coming to life on campus, made possible by the generosity of HMS Board of Trustees member Tom and Libby Hipp. A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at HMS School on Thursday, April 24th at 1:45pm to unveil this transformative project in collaboration with Walls for Justice, a Philadelphia-based organization that uses public art to inspire change and amplify community voices.
Spearheaded by HMS Art Teacher Paige Knowles, the mural was both designed and painted by HMS students, using an innovative, hands-on approach to ensure everyone could contribute. Through guided techniques and adaptive methods, Paige encouraged students of all abilities to take an active role in bringing the mural to life. Staff and Board members also joined in the process, making this a truly community-driven project. The finished mural now brightens the main dining area/cafeteria—one of the liveliest social gathering spaces at HMS, where students, staff, and families come together for daily dining and celebrations alike.
“This gift from Tom and Libby is a testament to how much our HMS supporters believe in creating a meaningful and inspiring environment for our students,” said Ceciry Rodriguez-Pimentel, Director of Development and Community Engagement at HMS. “Art has the power to bring people together, and this mural will be a lasting symbol of the creativity, strength, and joy that defines our school. We’re extremely grateful to the Hipp Family for making this wonderful project possible.”
Art Teacher Paige reflects on the impact of the mural project “HMS students have been involved in the mural creation process from the very beginning. By voting on colors, imagery, and other design elements students have been able to collaborate with their peers and take ownership of a large-scale art piece. Our mural serves as a visual representation of the diverse abilities and experiences within our school community. Students will be able to look at the painted wall and see themselves reflected, with the overall impact of the mural being to foster a sense of pride, belonging, and empowerment.”
Walls for Justice, known for using art as a catalyst for social change, has worked closely with HMS to ensure that the mural is not only visually stunning but also deeply reflective of the students’ voices and experiences. Founder and Executive Director of Walls for Justice, Samuel Rodriguez, shares,
“Walls for Justice is delighted to partner with HMS staff and students to create a mural that bridges art and activism. This collaboration isn’t just about painting; it’s a celebration of shared experiences and the profound joy that comes from creating together. Observing the students as they paint, the evident delight on their faces reaffirms our mission’s impact—Empowerment, giving voices to the unheard. Importantly, the mural mirrors the diversity of its creators, ensuring that every young artist sees a reflection of themselves within the art, reinforcing their place in the community.”
At HMS, donations like this make truly impactful projects possible. They create opportunities for students to engage, express themselves, and feel a sense of ownership over their space. HMS welcomes additional contributions from those who wish to support enriching initiatives that enhance the school environment and provide exceptional experiences for students.
