Director of Human Resources (FT)

The Director of Human Resources is responsible for setting the employee culture and climate of HMS School for Children with Cerebral Palsy in direct consultation with the school President. The goal being to create a supportive environment for a staff of over 130 full and part time employees engaged in providing a nurturing school and residential environment for our 60 students with medical complexity in keeping with the standards and priorities of 140 year old organization with strong roots in the West Philadelphia community.

The Director of Human Resources is responsible for ensuring that all practices with respect to employment are consistent, appropriate, and legally acceptable. The Director provides input and consultation to the management team with respect to HR issues and concerns, assuring that all employment relation issues are handled equally and fairly. The Director is responsible for assuring that practices reflect the current policies of the school while considering what is appropriate and in the best interest of the staff and the school. It is the Director’s responsibility to make recommendations for policy and procedure changes if needed.

The Director serves as the Grievance Officer where employees can go if they have confidential issues that need advice or assistance, and determines if investigations are needed and carries them out.

The Director performs and oversees all operational aspects of the HR Department including: payroll processing, recruitment, pre-hire processing for new hires, background checks, working with the Director of Finance on the salary and compensation program, enrollments and administration of benefits including open enrollments, Workers Compensation program management, FMLA management, performing exit interviews and sharing outcomes, new hire orientations providing information such as medical/dental/pension benefits options, timekeeping, and Act 168 confirmations.

Other responsibilities include composing employment letters, maintaining job descriptions, performance review tracking and intern coordination with HR Assistant.

The Director is responsible for management and maintenance of the HRIS/payroll system which includes all employee and employment information including tracking a variety of renewable employment documentation assuring updated documents are submitted by staff for continued employment.

The HRIS/payroll system is also used for biweekly payroll processing for 130 employees which is the responsibility of the HR Director and the Assistant.

  • Knowledge of and experience in payroll processing using HRIS systems

  • The ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality
  • 5 years similar experience in the HR Field

Preferred but not necessary:

  • Supervisory experience (this position supervisors 1 Human Resources Assistant)
  • HR and payroll experience in a school setting

This position will report directly to the HMS President.
